The Meaning OF Democratic Election in Ethiopia
Before I came the US, I have participated in Ethiopia 2005 National Election. I just fled to US right after the election ended. Before the election dates, I have participated in election seminars hosted by The Ethiopian National electoral board in Nazareth, Ethiopia. I have participated in the seminar representing the students in my high school. Now let me tell you what happened on the Election seminar. Long story short.
As the electoral board expressed, the objective of the program was to teach the community about democratic election and to influence them to participate actively on the election, but in contrary, on the day a speaker I forgot his name who was the leader of the program tell us about the statistics report he made about the election.
He presented his statistics to the audience. He told us his survey includes only the main cities:Addis Ababa, Nazareth, Awasa, Bahir Dar, Mekelle,, Harar, and so on.
His survey was how many percent of the people plan to elect EPRDF, Kinijit, Hibret and others. He told us according to his findings, more than 90% of the population in the city plan to elect the ruling party (EPRDF), 5%Kinijit, 3% Hibrit, and 2% others.
At the time, Every one in the meeting hall got confused by the man’s speech. Every one murmured how that will be possible, Especially in the city where a lot of people have enough information about the ruling party and the opposition party.
In my opinion 1) It is not fair to present such kind of statistical information in front of National electoral board before the election day. It is not democratic
2) As it is announced the aim of the program was to teach people the importance of Democratic election and to influence every one to take election card and participate on the election. so It was not appropriate.
3) It was a white lie. Because especially in cities Kinijit won by getting a great deal of votes. And This was proved after the election period.
As far as I was concerned, I didn’t believe the speaker and I presented about the program to students in my school. And I asked them who they would like to elect. They all say to me “kinijet(CUD)” and They all were ashamed by the man’s speech. Now I have made my own free survey. After the election result on cities, I prove myself and understood what the man was trying to do. Of course he was not a public officer. He was a cadre. As my friend tell me from back home, the ruling party is doing right now, what he’s been doing.
In Ethiopia’s election even if the votes counted fairly, there are problems before the election dates. Free, Fair, and democratic election should start a way back before the election date
1) The ruling party should help by finance, materials all parties who participate in election
2) The media TV,Radio, News paper, and so on should be free
3) The people should freely participate in demonstration, meetings hosted by any parties
4) The student’s materials such as educational text book. It all talks about the ruling party EPRDF. It is biased. It must be neutral from any party system
5) The ruling party should’t call meetings the community for his own agenda
In situations where the above procedures have not met, It will be wrong decision to participate in the so called democratic election because even if the ruling party win, it is not a winner!
Let me add one last important statement from the present president of USA
Obama says,
“There will be no Spanish America, White America, or Black America. There will be only United states of America!”
that is also possible for Ethiopia
Thanks for reading
Create a better day!
